Weekends

  • Sep. 19th, 2009 at 12:11 PM

There something magical about Sundays. I don’t know but you can have themost terrible week but it always ends on a Sunday. Is it because Sunday has always been associated with going to mass? Is it because the name itself suggests sunny disposition? It seems that when Sunday comes, things become a bit relaxed. This is this feeling of really wanting to stay at home and just slob around in my pajamas listening to old records with a glass of cold orange juice.

Right now Shaun Cassidy’s Born Late from 1977 is playing on vinyl. It never occurred to me until lately that he’s one of the Hardy Boys. The show I used to watch as a kid .There is a slight drizzle outside and I don’t want to touch my most recent music. I prefer old ones. I spent an hour listening to Neil Diamond this morning over breakfast. Friends come and go but music is here to stay.

The JD Gear

  • Sep. 6th, 2009 at 9:10 AM

JD Tide appears on my other site www.mrbaxteria.blogspot.com. But since this is about turntables I might as well post it here. He is based in Hawaii and he's fun to talk to. Read the interview and you'll know what I mean :)

That music in your myspace profile is really good. Tell us more about it.

Thank you! As I am very new at the art of producing, the 2 tracks I have featured are just experimental songs. The 2 tracks are labeled as a genre called Mash- Ups, which is a very popular style of music in the dance scene.

I listened to your two mixes downloaded for personal use with your approval ;) . Those are hard pumping dance music , sure to get the adrenalin going. How did you create those?

Basically I play music that I myself would dance to. I play differently in clubs as opposed to when I create a mix CD. When I am DJing at a club, I focus more on high energy format. Basically I try to keep the dance floor as packed as I can. When I create a mix CD, I always try to create a different atmosphere. One mix might be more down tempo, while another may be more Uplifting. It all depends on my mood.

Your music has been labeled as house and hard house. Are those appropriate descriptions?

It would have, a few years back. Nowadays I focus more on Electro House- which is very popular in the United States.

You are based in Hawaii right? Tell us about the club scene out there.

The club scene here hasn’t blossomed as much as in the bigger states, such as California. While the clubs here are nice, there is still a lot of potential.

What are the types of people that show up at your gigs?

All types! I’ve met people of all varieties, from college students to single parents, from married couples to a 60 year old! Basically everyone is there to enjoy the music.

What makes up the DJ Tide gang?

All you gotta be is so Fresh and so Clean clean! lol but in all seriousness, basically anyone with a positive attitude and a love for music and having fun!

How did you become a turntablist(right term?)

I wish I was a turntabalist! I respect anyone who can manipulate records and create music through music. What I mean is when they make the record go wiki wiki lol. I would label myself more as a Club/Rave DJ, in that’s when I focus more of my music towards.

.Any musical preference?

Oh man that’s a hard question, because I love a wide variety! But if you are referring towards a preference in what I tend to play, hmmmm. I love Hip House, as well as remixes of 80s music. I love playing music that will also make me dance!

Tell us about your gear(turntables and all)

Originally my first pair of turntables was the technics 1200 mk2s. I forgot which mixer I had, but it was cheap. And a pair of cheap Sony headphones. But as vinyl tends to get really expensive, I had invested into CDJs. Mainly due to it being hassle to carry huge record bags everywhere.

How do you prepare for a big gig?

Oh man that’s a hard question, because I always get nervous before any gig, whether big or small! I usually plan out the first few songs I want to play, but from there its all about reading the crowd. Also lots of shots of Patron lol!

What's coming up for you?

Nothing big yet, just a weekly gig as well as various weekend parties. But keep up to date with me through this site!

Thoughts to dance enthusiasts who might want to check you out?

Just dance till the last record spins!!!! That’s what truly makes a DJ happy, seeing people just enjoying themselves and having fun.

How do you spend a weekend?

Usually I would just spend it either doing house work, or spending time with my family and fiancé. But at night, that’s when the fun starts!

If you were stranded in an island for a month, what are the five things you want to take with you just in case?

Technically I am stranded on an island lol. But if it was a small island, I would take with me a journal so I may keep myself sane. A computer with internet capabilities so I wouldn’t go bored *I know its not realistic but still lol* My massage chair because my back would probably get sore laying on the beach. My Ipod is another item I wouldn’t live without. The last thing would be the ring my Fiancé gave me.

Thank you so much for the interview! If you want to keep up to date with my schedule. just add me on myspace at www.myspace.com/tideremix

70's Turntables

I love the beauty of turntables from the 70's. Slick but not too modern enough, classic but not rough.

Setting Up My Speakers

  • Aug. 15th, 2009 at 4:26 PM

So here they are folks. Some of the components need a little repair. I got these for a cheap prize but they sound really good.

New Speakers for my Turntable

  • Aug. 1st, 2009 at 10:56 AM

I found a really cheap brand of large second hand speakers. My friend sell it for really cheap prize and what's good about them is that they're from a good brand. I like branded stuff when it comes to speakers because they always sound better.
I will be dropping by later to install them. My little Daichi speakers aren't sounding good because I guess the phono amp only works best with 3 way speakers(sub woofer, midrange and tweeter)
Now the nest thing I need to take care of would be the needle or stylus. But that would do after a few months.

I found a new turntable

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 12:08 PM

I was scouting the repair shops and I talked to this guy who is repairing audio stuff. I mentioned about wanting a belt for my tuentable. He showed me about his item. I was impressed. It's a yamaha and in perfect condition. I will check it out later.

For now this is the only smallest turntable I've seen in the market so far. This is from Crosley, the leading brand in turntable manufacturing since the WWII.

This type was manufactured in the 80s(when turntables were getting stiff competion from CDs).

Look At This Marantz TT-15S1 Turntable

  • Jun. 30th, 2009 at 3:12 PM

Beautiful, slick and artsy. Turntable players are making a big come back. Bands are now making music demanting that their records be released both in CDs and Vinyl. This one is a sure winner in terms of looks and functionality.

Chopin Vinyl at close

  • Jun. 29th, 2009 at 3:46 PM

My Chopin vinyls are in good condition. Thanks to some maintenance solvents . I saw this interesting picture in the internet and I think it is worth posting here. I love the close up of the grooves. Apart from the fact that they sound really good when the niddle hits them at 33 rpm.

Slick Black Kenwood Turntable

  • Jun. 28th, 2009 at 5:54 PM

Someone is selling this for an affordable price but 'affordable' is still beyond my budget. It's really nice. It's made in Japan. It is semi-automatic with nice body. It doesn't take too much space.

USB Turntables

  • Jun. 28th, 2009 at 5:05 AM

I love the idea of owning one these USB turntables someday. But the idea of playing analog music through the computer doesn't seem hot to me. I still love the feel of the needle touching the surface. But records gets worn out in time so it is important to have a back up.

Arrrrggghhhh!

  • Jun. 27th, 2009 at 2:15 AM

The problem with having three blogs is that it is pointless. There is nothing here that I don't post on the other one. I am not a frigging genius with unlimited mental resources. The thing is, I have started my two blogs a long time ago and I have just come around them lately, after making my celtimusic fan blog. Anyway enough of that. I have been getting good sleep lately. After making sure I shut my computer down after a designated time. I also make sure I post only once or if not, I make sure I post ocasionally on each blog. That way I have fresh ideas. My celticmusicfan blog is no longer getting hits it used to ,because I no longer try hard on it. I don't care about stats anymore. After all it is about music. I hope I get enough money soon so I could by that nice Kenwood turntable made in Japan. I need to get more resources like needles and belts.

Away from the platter

  • Jun. 26th, 2009 at 1:08 AM

I just realized it now that I haven't  played my vinyl records. I miss my old Henry Mancini as well as James Last. My digital camera is still on its trip so I could not take pictures. Just returned to work and found unsigned papers. Sigh.

Filipino Artists

  • Jun. 21st, 2009 at 2:21 PM

I was asked by Kerry from the Unity forum to host  the country of the week forum. I really love to represent the Philippines because I would be posting pics and answering questions from members relating to my country. I would then be featuring Filipino artists. But then again what is Filipino music? That is an interesting question. My record collection has rare Filipino artists on it. I don't really collect pop acts out there. And though Charise Pampenco is so popular (She even guested on Ophra). I don't really feel like collecting her album. Hell she sounds like a cross between Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. If you ask me what's a REAL filipino music then, you've gotta love Grace Nono and Joey Ayala to qualify and an OPM lover(Oriniogal Filipino Music lover)

Still resting

  • Jun. 20th, 2009 at 12:17 AM

I am recovering from sickness. There is something about being sick and having medication. It makes your head feel like you're in a bubble. I miss that kind of feeling. It puts you in a state that is so different. An altered reality. No wonder druggies love drugs so much. It makes life feel better. But I am not a druggie. Now would I want to be one. The last heavy stuff I took was like 3 or 4 years ago and I almost went to the hospital. But that taught me a heavy lesson. Never take more than you could handle.

Flu....?

  • Jun. 17th, 2009 at 8:47 PM

I have  a mild case of flu but there has been an alarming increase of H1N1 reported cases in the city. The government is really taking serious action . The thing is, it is really a pain in the ass. I noticed some guy in the office blowing his nose endlessly and then I ask myself if I am in a safe situation. I hope it gets better soon. I now have alcohol wherever I go.

ZZZZZZ

  • Jun. 17th, 2009 at 10:01 AM

I was asked to extend one more hour on my job. There were very few employees around maybe due to the weather. I didn't complain because I was absent for two days. So you know how it is...makes oen want to play a saint right?  Anyway I was so damn sleepy when I got out but I met Pola. She's on a different time shift. We chatted and had breakfast (I woirk at night). It was great.

Arrived home at 9 am and I refused to have breakfast because I had one already. Cranked up the volume to my fave rock bands. Currently The Killers' new album is on my top list. Damn gone are the days. I am glad my blogging is taking me away.
